The power of macro photography lies mainly in its ability to unveil details that are – in normal conditions – concealed from the eye. Small subjects, like flowers and insects, are captured in greater-than-life size and brought closer to us.
However, describing macro photography exclusively as the art of the extreme closeup is not entirely accurate.
Macro can be creatively used not only to reveal miniature worlds but to investigate aspects that are essential to photography, such as light, shape, pattern and textural depth.
This selection of beautiful photographs, covering a wide range of subjects, exhibits how there can be many sides to the general concept of macro photography.
1. Refraction of a Daisy Flower
2. Chess & Climbers
3. At the Parking Lot
4. On a Small Yule Tree
5. Green Swirl
6. Take the Rainbow
7. Batman & Deer
8. Behold the Human Eye: Part II
13. Deep Jungle
14. Petal Lady
It's all in the details.
Indeed, the path to originality can sometimes be found in the smaller things. More than other styles of photography, macro also is about curiosity and the desire to surprise the viewer.
