Publisher comes with a collection of tools and templates that will let you design your card very quickly and eliminate the need to learn complicated techniques beforehand.
This step-by-step tutorial will guide you through the creation of your business card in Publisher.
Step 1. Getting started.
Start Publisher and create a new business card document (File>New>Business Cards). Wait for the templates to load and then select one of the available templates.
For this tutorial, I am picking the Arrows design. Choose another if you find one you like better since the workflow is the same for any template.
If you are choosing one of the online templates, you will need an active Internet connection for it to download.
Step 2. Customizing colors and fonts.
Under “Customize” you will find a bunch of options for customization.
Color Scheme comes with a series of color palettes which you can pick by navigating the drop-down menu. Font Scheme presents several typefaces coupled together. Page Size will let you choose between portrait or landscape orientation.
When you select any of these, the card’s preview changes accordingly. If want to use your logo, tick the “Include logo” box.
Step 3. Adding your information and logo.
The card template includes dummy text and a logo you can replace with your own.
Select “Create new” in the “Business Information” menu. When the “Create New Business Information Set” pops up, put in your details, such as our name, address and contact information.
Click on the “Add logo” button and browse your folders for your logo image.
In this case, the area of the template where the logo will be is white, but not all templates are the same. Some may feature colored or graphic backgrounds. I recommend using a file with a transparent background, like PNG or GIF.
Click on the “Save” button when you have filled all of the set, and then click the “Create” button located under the card’s preview when you are done.
Step 4. Creating the back.
After completing the formatting for the front, you will need to create the back of your card.
Go to the Insert panel and create a new page (Insert>Page>Insert Page). When the pop-up menu appears, select “After current page” and then “Duplicate all objects on page 1."
By doing this, all the back design items will match the front side.
For editing the text, select it and enter your wording. For changing images, double click on them and select “Change Picture"in the Format panel. Browse your folders for the new pictures and confirm.
Click on each element and move the transform handles to change its size and position. Get rid of the items you don’t need by selecting them and hitting the backspace.
Step 5. Saving the project.
Click on the “Save” icon on Publisher’s top-left bar to save your project. You can save in the default PUB format or in the printer-friendly PDF if you have to hand your file to an external printing service.
Save frequently as you work on your card so no changes are lost.
Step 6. Printing.
To optimize the printing process and save on time and resources, you can select “Multiple copies per sheet” (File>Print>Pages>Multiple copies per sheet) in the print options.
Publisher will automatically accommodate your desired number of cards in a single sheet. To print both sides, select “Print on Both Sides."
TIP: Printing a double-sided card can be tricky, as the front and back must be perfectly aligned. Always test on plain paper and adjust your settings if necessary before printing on your card stock.
If you have the time, try out a commercial printer for a more polished and professional-looking card.
